“What happened? Where’d she go?”

No one could answer Sarzney’s question right away. Most stood frozen in place. Everyone looked up, down and all around, trying to find any hint of silver.

“Okay. I have a theory.”

A few eyes darted to the detective.

“I’m thinking there’s something electronic on the ground. I’m going to go check it out.”

“Okay. Yeah, that makes sense. Maybe she threw something out the window when it broke the first time. Everyone line up in front of and around the detective. Let’s go with him.”

Someone let out a groan, but it remained almost inaudible. This was what SWAT was made for, to go in when no one else could. They had all signed up for the job, and no one could complain.

The men made a perimeter around the detective, with the one woman in back, looking over her shoulder just to be safe. Together, everyone moved forward toward the building, moving in a rough circle.

They slowed when they came up to the sidewalk, and the wall. Here, glass crunched underfoot. Looking down, Colfax noted a lot of debris lay on the ground.

“Hold up. Any of that electronic? Point your wands at the litter, fellas. It’s the only light source we’ve got.”

The men in front waved their containment units around, somewhat awkwardly with the long rods. No one dared get too close, though. They had all seen enough people die today to make them edgy.

Before anyone could move closer, though, the chirp of sirens echoed off the buildings.

Most of the cops turned to look at squad cars flying in behind them.

“Eyes front,” Sarzney said. “Don’t let her get the jump on you.”

The officers turned back to face the litter. Colfax, though, had no containment unit. He felt free to look.

The detective watched as four squad cars surrounded a black autocab that landed behind the military perimeter.

“What do you think it is, sir?” Sarzney asked, keeping his eyes focused ahead.

He asked in part for his guys, who looked curious as well.

“I’m thinking it must be a VIP. Four red and blues escorted an autocab in.”

“An autocab?”

“Yeah. The way transportation has been disrupted lately, maybe an autocab is the only thing someone could get. Our people are accompanying for the sake of safety. Therefore, its a VIP. That’s my best guess.”

He watched as the military moved, almost like waves parting in the sea.

“Yeah, it’s a VIP, alright. The military is acting like it’s a general or something. Alright, let’s pull back. Keep an eye on the spot she disappeared. There’s no sewer grating around here, right? If she can slide under the crack of a door, I could see her going through a manhole or something.”

“No, sir. Just junk.”

“Okay. Pull back, let’s see who our visitor is and what they want.”

Slowly, the circle of officers retreated back across the street and drew near to the military perimeter again. Before they made it, soldiers pulled back and stood at attention.

Colfax furrowed his brows, wondering who would be flying in to see the scene firsthand.
